A Poem – He’s Fine!!!

white paper with black text in a typewriter

Normally I write a full blog post but the last few days have been hectic to say the least. Tuesday in particular was a horrible day which resulted in a day off school for my son who was completely distressed, and me desperately trying to catch up on work, and life, and personal admin and so rather than a full blog post I decided to publish a poem I have been working on. I have a series of poems in the pipeline and this is the first. I hope it sums up the battle I am currently locked in…..

He’s Fine!

From an early age I had my suspicions,
And as time went on I began my mission.
The biggest mission of my life,
Which caused my son’s school no end of strife.
I fought for answers, pushed for more,
To understand what we couldn’t ignore.

“He’s fine,
Please stop having a whine.”

My son refused to go to school,
And sending him felt very cruel.
Each morning he would cry, scream and shout,
and often he would really lash out.
I spoke several times to the teacher,
“He’s fine” they kept saying, just like a preacher.

“He’s fine,
You just need to grow a spine.”

But I knew the truth and the battle began,
All I wanted was the school to have a plan.
Phone calls, emails and meetings galore,
Until finally I couldn’t take any more.
A month off work I had to do,
Until I started to feel like new.

“He’s fine,
Don’t let him cross the line.”

Months have now passed and the battle is still going,
But every day our family’s knowledge is growing.
At home we have learned what helps him thrive,
With patience and time he comes alive.
We’ve built routines and learned his needs,
Which in turn helps him to succeed.

“He’s fine,
Stop reading every sign.”

Their words don’t change, “He’s fine,” they say,
But we keep pushing, day by day.
For every child deserves to be seen,
Not dismissed, ignored, or kept in between.
And hopefully with the right support, we’ll find,
The path where he can finally shine.
